Drunk GST Clerk Caught Selling Tax Files to Scrap Dealer for Rs 5000

A recent shocking case happened in Nagpur, where a GST clerk, who was drunk, was caught on camera taking away important tax documents having sensitive information worth crores. The GST clerk sold them to a scrap dealer for Rs 5,000.

The clerk, being identified as Mohan Gund, got the clerk job in the CGST department on compassionate grounds after the death of his father, who also worked in the GST department. He previously worked at the CGST department in Indore. He was later transferred to Nagpur because of repeated disciplinary issues. As per reports, he used to harass coworkers for money to buy alcohol and skipped work regularly, leading to his salary being stopped. The department did not take any strict action against him, considering his personal situation.

However, this time, Gund has crossed all the limits when staff found that some tax files were missing. After checking the CCTV footage, Gund was seen locating opposite VCA in Civil Lines in an auto with bundles of files. The officials tracked the scrap dealer and paid him to get back the documents. He was suspended on the spot by Assistant Commissioner Sadhishkumar Thota. While suspended, Gund must report every day at the CGST headquarters to mark his attendance.

The CGST Department has instructed for a detailed investigation. Gund’s Annual confidential report is already being investigated, and if he is found guilty, Gund, he could lose his job permanently.

The matter has brought several serious concerns to light about the security of sensitive data in government offices. If a dishonest person gets access to this data, it could result in a data breach.
