Govt. Permits Export of 50,000 MT Organic Sugar Annually; Eases Restrictions on Organic Sugar Exports

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has recently issued an Official Notification No. 51/2025-26 dated December 29, 2025, informing that the Government of India has permitted the export of 50,000 metric tonnes (MT) of organic sugar per financial year, with immediate effect. The export will be allowed under HS Codes 17011490 and 17019990, on condition that the overall annual ceiling is 50,000 MT.

Under the revised policy, the export of organic sugar, which was earlier restricted, is now permitted up to a specified quantity threshold. These exports must follow the rules and procedures set out in the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023, as amended from time to time.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) will later report the modalities for allocation and monitoring of export quantities.

This action is likely to enhance the nation’s organic sugar sector, support farmers and exporters involved in organic production, and also help the nation reinforce its position in the international food market.
