ITR-U Rectifications Now Handled by Jurisdictional Assessing Officer: CPC Transfers Rights

Recently, it has come to attention that many taxpayers have received an email from the Income Tax Department in reference to the Updated Income Tax Return (ITR-U) with the subject “Transfer of Rectification Rights to the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer (JAO).” This email is not a notice; it is for informational purposes. It serves to let taxpayers know that they will be following a different process for rectification in the future.

The communication informs that the Centralized Processing Centre has transferred the authority to handle the rectification request to the respective Jurisdictional Assessing Officer (JAO). The transfer usually occurs when the CPC is not able to process the rectification accurately, and human intervention is required.

With this update, taxpayers must now directly contact their AO for the rectification of their Income Tax Return (ITR) in the relevant assessment year. The email has all of the JAO’s relevant details, including the email ID, ward, and office address.

If anyone received such an email, there is nothing to worry about. It’s a routine notification from the department, explaining where the correction request will be sent next. For help on next steps, taxpayers may want to consider reaching out to their tax advisor.
